Traditional colonial

The owners of this renovated stone home wanted to move their ho-hum hedge to make room for more varied plantings, with something blooming in every season. We kept a smattering of evergreens for winter, but added perennials with colorful foliage, to ensure color all year, even when nothing is in bloom.

Plantings by the foundation are more in scale with the house, and the hedges pruned into unnatural balls were removed. A looser, more natural look also requires less maintenance.

The back patio was also spruced up with shade and rock-loving perennials.
